Body Mass Index or BMI, which is a measure of weight in relation to height, was determined to be the most accurate and practical measure. A BMI of more than 25 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30+ classifies an individual as obese.
These definitions are based on evidence suggesting that health risks are higher at or above a BMI of 25, and continue to rise with an increasing BMI.

It has a tendency to overestimate body fat in persons who are very muscular, and it can sometimes underestimate body fat in persons who have lost muscle mass, such as many elderly.
